Runway

Runway Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0, what the plans really cost per clip, and when Runway is worth it over cheaper models.

Runway is now more of an editing and finishing studio than a place to generate cheap clips. Use it for Aleph 2.0 edits (change one frame, carry the change through the clip) and for pipeline tools such as HDR conversion. For plain generation, Gen-4.5 on the Standard plan costs about 2.30 USD for an 8 second clip, which is more than Kling or Veo Fast. If you also want Seedance or Veo, buying them directly is usually cheaper.

  • Standard and Pro credits do not roll over. Max rolls over for up to one month.
  • Purchased credits never expire (minimum purchase 1,000). The free 125 credits do not expire.
  • Standard and above have no watermark.
  • Runway replaced its old Unlimited plan with Max. "Unlimited" now means specific promotions, such as unlimited 4K upscaling and Wan 3.0 unlimited in Tool Mode on Max until 18 Oct 2026.

Best for

  • Editing an existing clip. Aleph 2.0 lets you change one frame and carries the change through the clip. ProRes 4444 and PNG export on Pro and above.
  • Finishing tools. Runway's own posts show Ruby (SDR to 16 bit HDR, ProRes and EXR) and frame rate conversion up to 120 fps on any video.
  • Control and VFX work. Practitioner guides rate Runway for control tooling and VFX workflows.
  • Cheap previz on the API. Gen-4 Turbo costs 0.05 USD/second.

Creators post very little about Runway's own video model in 2026, so community evidence on Gen-4.5 quality is thin.

Weak at

  • Price for plain generation. On Standard, Gen-4.5 costs about 2.30 USD per 8 s clip.
  • Reselling other models. Higgsfield's comparison puts Seedance 2.5 (720p, 8 s) at 5.76 USD on Runway's 15 USD plan, more than other platforms. That figure comes from a competitor. Veo 3.1 Fast on Runway's API (0.15 USD/second) also costs more than on Google's own API (0.10 to 0.12).
  • Known Gen-4.5 limits. Runway lists weak cause and effect reasoning, objects that disappear or change, and "success bias", where actions tend to succeed even when you want them to fail.

How to prompt it

Runway's help center blocked our reader, so the tips below come from practitioner guides, not Runway itself.

  • Image to video: describe the motion only. The image is the first frame. Describing it again weakens the motion.
  • Add one layer at a time: first camera motion, then subject motion, then scene motion.
  • State the target condition instead of a negative: "camera locked", not "no camera shake".
  • One camera move and one main action per shot, as with every model.

For Aleph 2.0 edits, keep the instruction to one change per pass.

Example prompts

Gen-4.5 image to video, motion only:

Prompt
Camera locked. She lifts the cup, blows across it once, sips and sets it down,
then her gaze drifts to the window. Steam curls and fades. The curtain moves slightly, then settles.

Gen-4.5, layered camera and subject motion:

Prompt
Slow dolly in. The skateboarder pushes off and rolls toward the camera,
leaves blow across the empty parking lot behind him. Late afternoon light, long shadows.

Aleph 2.0, a single edit:

Prompt
Change the season to winter: snow on the ground and rooftops, breath visible. Keep the people, their actions and the camera move the same.

Gen-4 Turbo previz, to check blocking before a paid render:

Prompt
Wide shot, static. Two people meet in the middle of a bridge, shake hands and walk off in opposite directions.

Settings that save credits

  • Check the per credit price of your plan. Max costs 0.010 USD per credit, Standard 0.024. If you generate a lot, the API at 0.01 USD per credit is the cheapest way to use Runway.
  • Previz on Gen-4 Turbo (0.05 USD/second on the API) before using Gen-4.5.
  • Buy credits only when you need them. Purchased credits never expire, while Standard and Pro monthly credits are lost at renewal.
  • Use 4K upscaling (currently promoted as unlimited) on the keeper only.
  • Buy Seedance and Veo directly unless you need them inside a Runway project.

Known issues

ProblemWhat to do
Action succeeds when it should fail (a fall, a miss)Show the failure as a result: "the ball bounces off the rim and rolls away"
Object changes or disappears mid clipShorter clips, fewer objects, and a first frame that shows the object clearly
Credits gone at renewalStandard and Pro do not roll over. Spend them, or buy one time credits that never expire.
Old Unlimited plan goneReplaced by Max. Third party reports disagree on the migration dates.
